Turkish Drillship Çağrı Bey Docks in Mogadishu, Paving Way for Somalia’s Oil Era
In a major leap toward energy independence, the Turkish-owned drilling vessel Çağrı Bey has arrived in Mogadishu, with Somali leaders set to formally welcome it. The ship is expected to begin offshore exploration near Galmudug in the coming weeks, as the federal government eyes both resource wealth and political leverage.
The Turkish oil exploration vessel Çağrı Bey reached the Somali capital on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the country’s long-delayed bid to tap into its offshore hydrocarbon reserves.
The ship, which will be formally received at the Port of Mogadishu in a ceremony attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other senior federal officials, is scheduled to proceed to the waters off Galmudug state within the next week.
According to independent sources familiar with the operation, initial surveys and drilling preparations are expected to take several years before any commercial output begins.
The arrival comes as Somalia’s federal government intensifies direct election processes in the Southwest, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle regional states. Political observers note that the government views the oil exploration push as a strategic opportunity to consolidate national support and undercut internal opposition by demonstrating tangible economic progress.
While no official timeline for first oil has been released, officials in Mogadishu have described the Çağrı Bey’s arrival as a turning point, signaling that Somalia is finally moving from exploration pledges to on-the-ground action.
